A few years ago, my family got a little puppy. Max was a cross between a Bichon Frise and a Lhasa Apso.
After a few months, Max was diagnosed with a liver shunt. During the few hard months he had yet to live, my mother, my sister and I all did what we could for Max, and supported him as best we could.
One weekend, my family was going up yo Auckland for a family get together at my Aunt's. She had barricaded the back garden so Max would not be able to fet out, but during the afternoon we all realised he had disappeared.
I started panicking and we all searched around my Aunt's property, but Max was nowhere to be seen. Eventually we heard a slight but definite crying on the otherside of my Aunt's thick hedge. It turned out that there was a hole just big enough for Max to crawl out of, but the branches had sprang back into place and there was no way for him to come back through. Mum opened the gate next to the hedge, and Max was sitting there, crying pitifully. As soon as he saw Mum, he stopped and trotted over to her, where he was immediately swept up. Max spent the rest of the day stretched out on Mum's lap - fast asleep.
Had he somehow connected his fright with Mum? Or had Max just known that
whatever happens, Mum would rescue
him? We will never know, because Max sadly passed away a few months later. He was a little terror that captured out hearts and no matter what happens, we will always love him.
