How did Wally know?

How did Wally know?

Back in 1980, we purchased a Lhasa apso pup and named him Wally.

At the time, I owned a small bus service and occasionally the railways department would charter my buses to run in lieu of trains while they worked on the overhead wires. On these weekends I would buy my Sunday paper at an early-opening newsagent, then go home, throw the paper on a chair and go to bed.

The newsboys delivered the papers in a wheelbarrow and blew a whistle to let you know they were coming. Normally, Wally would come into my room and wake me long before I heard the whistle and I would be out the front waiting when the boy arrived. On the days that I brought the paper home early, he did not wake me. How did he know?
