The Treat

A friend's daughter brought home a little unwanted ginger terrier cross and named it Scotty. Father Bill became very fond of this little dog. He taught it how to eat ice cream, something he was fond of himself and used to have a helping each evening after dinner.
While he was eating his ice cream he gave Scotty a small amount, a very small amount, about a dessertspoon, in his own bowl to enjoy. Scotty used to look forward to this. It became a regular ritual.
One night, while Bill sat eating his ice cream, Scotty suddenly started whimpering. He ran downstairs into the rumpus room and sat under a chair and cried piteously.
Bill and wife Von rushed downstairs and tried to comfort him but to no avail. They became increasingly worried. He must be in terrible pain to be going on like this. They would have to ring the vet.
'It could be all that ice cream you've been feeding him,' Von suggested.
'Ice cream! I didn't give him his ice cream. My mind was on other things and I completely forgot about it.'
So Scotty was carried upstairs where he was given a double share. He happily licked it up, secure once more.
Hopefully he would be not forgotten again, but if he was he certainly knew what to do about it.
