We had a black and white spaniel called Specky and a cat called Pussy. Pussy and Specky had grown up in our old house. Next door Specky had a best friend which was also a black and white dog. They always use to look at each other through the crack in the fence. Our neighbour used to let Specky go in their backyard to play with their dog.
We moved into a new house a few kilometres away and took our pets in the car with us. As soon as we settled in our new house Pussy was gone! We looked everywhere and we called as loud as we could, where was she?
We were trying to think where she could have gone. Suddenly I had an idea which was hard to believe. What if she went back to our old house? So we went back in the car and back to our old house. We looked around the yard and finally found her in her usual sleeping spot. Then we took her back home in the car.
A few days later our dog Specky had gone. I was devastated, we looked around our neighbourhood but we couldn’t find him. We had nearly given up hope of ever finding him. Then, our next door neighbour from our old house appeared at our door. He had arrived in his taxi as he was a taxi driver and Specky was in the taxi. He had explained how Specky had come to his house to play with his best friend dog; he must have really missed him. I really did not want my pets to do this again because they could get easily get run over as they have to cross a main road which was always busy to get to our old house.
Once again, a few days later Pussy had gone missing again we had a short look around the house and went back to the old house and found her there again in the yard. To stop Pussy doing this process we kept her in the garage for a few weeks which helped, as she never left our house again. As for Specky, he occassionally went back to see his best friend next door to our old house, and came home in the taxi each time. A few months passed and he finally stopped repeating this.
I always wondered how they knew the way home. We did not walk them so they could not have smelled their scent. If we went by our car how did they know the way to our old house?

Great story, Daniella! I have heard of this same kind of thing being reported quite often - where animals find their way back home.
In our area, hunters let their dogs loose to chase deer in deep woods - many miles from their home - and the dogs often find their way back home just fine on their own.
It's always a good idea to confine any animal for a few weeks any time they are moved. It helps them "reset" their radar, and know where home is.
Keep writing! I really enjoyed your story.
Quite an amazing true story, pets have a lot more depth than some people think

This story doesn't surprise me at all. Animals seem to have an inbuilt radar.
