For 15 years we had a wonderful golden-eyed tabby cat named Bruno. He was such an asset to our family and very tolerant of children and other pets.
I didn't realise what an important part of the family he was until I was recuperating from foot surgery. On most nights, my husband and son would retire for the evening before I would. Bruno would usually stay by my side and keep me company. Then when I turned off the TV and lights he would disappear. Once I got to the stairs he'd be there waiting for me.
I had not learned how to safely navigate stairs with crutches. Instead, I'd go along backwards on my backside, dragging the crutches along. Bruno would always be one or two stairs above me, watching me and encouraging me upwards.
It was only when I was safely up the long steep flight that he would leave me and attend to his own business. This continued every night of the many weeks I had crutches. I don't know who was more relieved when I finally graduated to a walking cast - me or Bruno!
