Boo was a big Airedale terrier, a gentle giant of about 90 pounds. I lived in an urban area and right next door to me lived a little boy, Timmy (not his real name), and his grandpa. Timmy was an overweight boy, and about seven years old at the time of this story.
One day Timmy was playing in my yard with Boo. His grandpa came out of his house and – it was awful – he yelled at Timmy, ‘Get out of that yard before that dog bites you.’
Timmy said, ‘Grandpa, Boo would never bite me, he loves me.’
Grandpa, believe it or not, said, ‘Dogs hate fat kids and you are fat.’
I said to my neighbour, ‘I don’t think you understand what you are saying to your grandson.’
He said, ‘Yes, the kid is fat and the dog is going to bite him.’
Timmy went and lay down on our lawn chair and closed his eyes. I was trying to think what to say to comfort this poor kid, when Boo went and laid his big head on Timmy’s chest. Timmy opened his eyes and said, ‘I knew you loved me, Boo!’ and everything was all right for them.
Boo seemed to know just what to do. What a dog!
