Inch by Inch...
My kelpie/border collie, Charlie, and our family Staffy mix, Jack, are both very different dogs with very different personalities. One thing they do is the same though.
When told to "lie down" and "stay", especially for long periods of time or if there is something interetsing going on that they're missing out on, they will ever so casually stretch their paws out and yawn, as if to say, "Don't mind me. I'm really not that fussed about what's happening over there." When your back is turned, or they think you're not looking, they'll ever so slowly inch forward, still on their bellies. Every time you look at them, they'll feign boredom and look innocent. Question the fact that they seem to be closer to you than before and they'll act shocked and offended. Look away and they'll creep forward again.
Charlie pulled this trick on me quite recently. I was reading and didn't even notice he had crawled forward until I felt a wet nose pressed against my ankle. It's hard to get mad when they grin at you and act so happy just to be with you again.
