In Memory of Mamy Kitty II
Mamy Kitty is the descendant of a cat abandoned by a former renter. My
husband didn't want her but said it was one of the best things which happened to him. She was the most affectionate cat imaginable and followed him around everywhere when he worked on the farm. He very much liked her company and missed her immensely when she disappeared one day. He never knew for certain what happened to her. One of her kittens is Mamy Kitty.
Mamy Kitty was at first not at all affectionate. She only came to eat and then disappeared like feral cats do. As we have seen from our previous story she was not only affectionate later, but indeed very caring and loving not only to her own kind but to us humans as well. She was also very serious.
She did not play at all like other kittens do who play with a moving string held in front of them. She would look at it and sigh: "Oh brother!"
She was in love with my husband. She loved the smell of his armpit, and would loose herself in the exuberance of his male pheromones (the smell of his male hormones!). She lay on top of him and gave him the "Kitty massage" with her paws. (Do I have to x-rate something here??) He thinks she was his girlfriend in a past life. (Now I know why I was jealous of her!)
She must have had a secret life and obviously my husband was not her only love and she became a mother. She lost all her kittens of her first batch because she didn't really care for them. But with her next she had learned her lesson and was a good mother. All her kittens were carefully hidden in the Ohia Forest nearby, probably in one of the numerous holes in the lava (we live on Hawaii). We never knew where she hid them because she was always top secretive.
But then, one day, she decided to bring her family home and it was a great day for us. Like a parade going on for quite a while she brought one after the other little pitiful meowing babies in her mouth out of the wilderness into the civilization of our home. They were all incredibly shy and scared at first of course but we had so much fun watching them. We would sit for hours just look. Mamy had many litters because she wasn't fixed. But then one day we realized she didn't look too good. Her fur was kind of shabby and she was bony as the constant pregnancies and milking of her babies took a toll on her health. So we brought her to the vet , got her fixed and her active work life was over.
After that she started to take a real interest in her looks and spent hours on licking her coat till her hair was clean and shiny and surrounded her like a halo.
We were dazzled by her beauty.
But the cutest thing was that after her career as a very successful and wonderful caring mother was over she decided that it is time for the lighter part of life and some fun. And she actually started to play. We couldn't believe our eyes.
A cat who hasn't been playing as a kitten decides she could relax a bit and enjoy life as long as it was time. (I wonder now if she had a sense that life is short and wouldn't last forever?)
We were delighted whenever we saw her rolling around and playing with just about anything that came her way. It was like bouts of joy suddenly overcame her with the realization of her newfound freedom and time off.

Posted by ate diana 8 months ago xI thought the stories here give us at least one realization: That we don't really know too much about animals and a sense of wonder. When it comes to matters of life and death, animals might be even more intuitive than humans: during the big tsunami in the south-east much more humans than animals died (so I heard). Maybe I am wrong but I heard there were very few dead animal bodies floating around. They had all gone to higher ground and saved themselves.
