Houdini Horse

The water was sparkling in the summer sun as it tumbled out of the tap and onto the horse’s nose. Invincible, the horse, was thoroughly enjoying playing with the stream with his mouth and nose. He also pawed at the growing puddle beneath his hooves, making a muddy hole. Irritated, I turned off the tap tightly. A tin can was tied across the top of the tap to prevent Invincible from turning it on again. This was not successful either as he undid the wired or removed the can so he could again turn on the tap and play in the water.

He then began opening the latch on the gate into the house yard and kept trying to come up the stairs into the house. It was only a line of electric fence that eventually stopped him turning on the tap, opening the gate and stair climbing! A padlock also had to put on the front gate to stop him letting himself and his two equine friends, Flamingo and Noir, out to go exploring – always returning home at dinner time though!

The horses have nearly 60 acres to roam and pick at the patches of grass that have survived the drought. If I am late coming home, all three are impatiently waiting at the front gate. They then race my vehicle up the one kilometre driveway, bucking and snorting. They are able to traverse a gulley shortcut and are always waiting near the feed shed, snorting and chests heaving from their gleeful galloping.

If I reprimand Invincible for being “in my space” at dinner time, he will chase Noir and nip him. Noir will then chase Aqua, my German Shepherd Dog and try to nip her. It is very funny to watch. Aqua is far too wise to let him catch her and has learnt that if Noir is chased, start running as her turn is coming!

What fun horses and dog to have.

One of my daughter's horses came into the house once and was rifling through house plans in the Office. We wondered if he was planning a new stable. Some of them are real characters.
