Choking hazard!
One day I read a sad story from a family whose German Shepard had died from choking on a tennis ball. Knowing how very much my own shepard, Apache, loves his tennis balls, I told him to listen while I read the story to him. While I read the story, he watched me attentively, with his tennis ball in his mouth. At the conclusion of the story, he dropped his tennis ball and went to the "toy" box to retrieve his very large, not-possible-to-choke-on purple ball!

This is my story which I submitted quite some time ago, before I lost Apache last year to a dibilitating disease. I'm pleased to see it published, he was extraordinary and I miss him every day.

Perhaps it wasn't the actual words of the story that Apache understood, but rather your body language as you read it. Perhaps you were pointing to the tennis ball he was holding, and there was a tone of disapproval in your voice.
Animals certainly sense and understand body language, voice volume and inflection, etc. So, I can understand him dropping the tennis ball.
But going and getting a bigger ball?? That's harder to explain away!
Thanks for the story. I really enjoyed it.

I really liked reading your story about Apache. German Shepherds are such clever doggies, that I believe he really did fully understand the story. It certainly seems like it anyway, 'cause at the end of it, he got up and changed the tennis ball for a bigger one. He is not only very clever, but very sensible as well.

I am not too sure this IS a coincidence. German Shepherds are pretty smart.
